Drinking water was served to councillors of Namakkal Corporation in stainless steel bottles during the council meeting held recently.
The Namakkal Corporation has launched a campaign titled ‘Plastic-Free City – A New Beginning for Namakkal Corporation’ as part of its efforts to achieve zero waste generation within Namakkal city limits. It recently passed a resolution in this regard during the council meeting.
As the first step towards eliminating use of single-use plastic items, the corporation has decided to promote and use various eco-friendly and reusable alternatives.
A special resolution was placed before the council to encourage the use of alternative materials instead of single-use plastic products. The resolution also emphasised the importance of reducing plastic waste at various functions and events, including weddings, by replacing it with reusable and recyclable alternatives and the principle of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). The resolution was passed unanimously by the Council.
Corporation Commissioner S. Selva Balaji said drinking water was served in stainless-steel bottles, tea was served in stainless-steel tumblers, and snacks were served on stainless-steel plates to all councillors, the Mayor, and other officials present at the council meeting.
It was further decided that alternative, reusable, and recyclable materials would be used instead of single-use plastic items in Namakkal Corporation.
The public should also reduce the use of plastic products and use reusable and recyclable alternative materials at all types of functions, events, weddings, and other gatherings conducted within the limits of Namakkal Corporation, the Commissioner added.
