The special discount sale of handloom products, including silk sarees, was conducted at the District Collectorate on Friday in view of the National Handloom Day.
Inaugurating the sale, District Collector Anand Mohan honoured the handloom weavers and disbursed welfare assistance to them.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Anand Mohan said the National Handloom Day was being observed on August 7 every year to commemorate India’s ‘Swadeshi Movement’ launched on this in 1905 against the colonial rule and reassure the support for handloom products. Since more than 70% of the handloom weavers were rural women, the industry was guaranteeing financial independence to them. Hence, the consumers should support them by buying the handloom products, mostly done in rural areas.
Mr. Anand Mohan, who was in dhoti, honoured five handloom weavers and disbursed welfare assistance worth ₹11.79 lakh.
As part of this celebration, 30% discount is being given for all handloom products being sold in the Co-Optex showrooms and other shops.
In the celebration organised in Nagercoil, Kanniyakumari District Collector M. Prathap, also in dhoti, appealed to the weavers to introduce new pleasing colours and designs in their products so that customer base for handloom products would become larger and attract the younger generation also.
“The district administration is ready to extend technical and financial assistance for introducing new colours and designs in handloom products,” Mr. Parathap said.
The Collector assured the weavers that special expos for showcasing exclusive the handloom products would be organised in the district during festival seasons, including Onam, Ramzan, Navaratri, Deepavali, Christmas, Pongal and at the tourist spots of the district, including Kanniyakumari.
