National Handloom Day was observed in Madurai on Friday to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement which was launched on August 7 in 1905 against colonial rule and to promote the handloom sector.
According to a press release, the main objective of the event was to raise awareness of the significance of the handloom industry, its contributions to the nation’s socio-economic development, to promote the industry and to improve the income of the handloom weavers.
As part of the event, handloom weavers were felicitated. Welfare assistance to the tune of ₹3.68 lakh was disbursed to five handloom weavers and loom equipment worth ₹1.27 lakh was distributed to 11 weavers. A medical camp was also conducted.
Department of Handlooms officials, handloom weavers and the public participated in the event.
