The need to address infrastructure issues at Coimbatore North Railway Station was emphasised at the DRUCC (Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee) meeting conducted in Salem recently.
The non-functional lifts, platform height, and absence of ramp facility pose safety risks to the daily commuters and other passengers, V.K.S.K. Senthilkumar, DRUCC member, said.
Non-functional lifts cause immense inconvenience to senior citizens, differently-abled persons, pregnant women, and passengers with luggage, Mr. Senthilkumar said in a representation.
Platform height is inadequate in certain areas and has to be raised. The damaged platform surface on the southern side where passengers frequently slip and fall while exiting must be rectified immediately.
Also, escalators are a dire requirement. Absence of ramp facility in the portico area makes it difficult for wheelchair users and elderly passengers to enter the station, he said.
Passenger shelters on the northern side of the platforms should be extended. The tall high-voltage electricity tower obstructing the entry and exit at the northern side entrance from Dr. Rajendra Prasad Road (100 Feet Road) should be removed and underground electricity cables should be laid at the earliest, Mr. Senthilkumar said.
