The Forest Department celebrated the World Wetlands Day in Pudukottai and Nagapattinam districts on Monday by driving home to students the need to protect wetlands.
In Pudukottai, the department officials organised painting, elocution, and essay competitions for school and college students at the H.H. The Rajah’s College in Pudukottai town related to the theme “Wetlands and traditional knowledge: Celebrating cultural heritage.”
An awareness rally was organised in Pudukottai town involving school and college students in connection with World Wetlands Day. Pudukottai District Forest Officer S. Ganesalingam explained in detail to the students about the wetlands and the need to protect them, a press release said.
The department officials organised an awareness rally on the Nagapattinam-Vedaranyam road in Nagapattinam district involving schoolchildren to create awareness on the need to protect wetlands. Prizes and certificates were given to students who emerged winners in painting, essay, and quiz competitions.
A beach cleaning programme was organised at Kodiyakarai by the Forest Department officials involving volunteers and members of the environmental development committee, another release said.
