A student of the National Institute of Technology – Karnataka (NIT-K), Surathkal, died after he allegedly jumped from the fifth floor of his hostel building on Thursday (September 17, 2026).
Though he was taken to a nearby hospital, doctors declared him dead upon arrival. He was a final year undergraduate student of the Department of Mining Engineering.
Expressing deep sorrow over the untimely demise of the student, the institute said in a release that it is extending all possible help to his family. The student had maintained high academic grades and was an active participant in sports and other activities.
The institute said that is has been continuously strengthening its student welfare and mental health support infrastructure. It engages professional psychological counsellors and a consulting psychiatrist through the Health Care Centre, and has MoUs with nearby medical colleges for round-the-clock counselling support.

The recent introduction of Life-Skill Activities for all newly admitted undergraduate students is meant to strengthen their physical, mental and social health, the institute said.
