Noted Indian-American radiation oncologist Dr. Nori Dattatreyudu expressed his happiness after being conferred the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. “I have received many awards in America and across the world, but this recognition from my own country, my people, and my government holds special significance,” he said.
In a statement on Monday, Dr. Dattatreyudu described the award as both an honour and challenge, reinforcing his determination to combat the cancer epidemic in the two Telugu States and across India.
Noting that the Chief Ministers of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, A. Revanth Reddy and N. Chandrababu Naidu, had already endorsed the roadmap he proposed for cancer prevention and treatment, he said, “It is now my responsibility to implement these plans.”
He expressed gratitude to the Chief Ministers for allowing him to serve on Telugu soil, where he has worked at the grassroots level.
He reaffirmed his long-term vision to eradicate certain types of cancers within six to seven years and emphasised the importance of awareness and preventive measures. “With proper awareness, some cancers can be stopped from progressing,” he said.
Dr. Dattatreyudu also acknowledged the encouragement from the Central government, noting that the Padma Bhushan will inspire him to work even more enthusiastically in the coming years.
