Ongole Municipal Corporation (OMC), originally established by the British government as a municipality on September 30, 1876, will complete 150 years of its formation on September 30, 2026. As part of the sesquicentennial celebrations, a series of events are planned from August 24, 2026 involving notable personalities from Prakasam district.
State Minister for Social Welfare Dr. Dola Sree Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy called upon the local people to actively participate in the celebrations. He said: “The city holds great historical significance and the series of events will showcase its glorious past and create lasting memories.”
“Everyone holds a deep affection for their hometown. Ongole— the district headquarters, which has evolved from a village into a town and subsequently a city—boasts a rich history. As the city continues to expand, all citizens must participate in the effort to transform it into a highly liveable city that excels in maintaining law and order, and ensuring the safety of women,” he said.
Ongole MLA Damacharla Janardhana Rao stated that the 40-year-old drinking water pipelines were being replaced and that development works were being carried out with an eye on requirements for the next 40 years. He said that drainage systems were being constructed and special focus was being placed on the development of Mangamuru Road, Trunk Road and Kothapatnam Road.
He noted that improvements in sanitation, electrification, and central lighting have already been completed and affirmed that these development activities would be taken forward. The MLA urged the public to participate in the events. He also sought suggestions and advice from the people on organising the anniversary celebrations and the ongoing development works.
Collector P. Raja Babu said, “These celebrations are being organised to showcase the city’s greatness to future generations. As part of this initiative, the city is undergoing extensive beautification, as it stands as a symbol of our self-respect. World Children’s Telugu Conference is also scheduled to be held in Ongole this December.”
