Only 16 of the Delhi Development Authority’s (DDA) 736 parks, or 2.2%, have CCTV cameras, according to an internal safety audit report, the civic body said in a press release on Friday. The audit flagged safety concerns across the parks and classified them by risk, with 190 categorised as high-risk, 258 as medium-risk and 288 as low-risk. It also identified 134 parks that require gunmen
According to the release, the audit was completed within a week following directions from Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu after the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old girl in Astha Kunj Park, which triggered protests in Delhi and was followed by a police encounter in the area.
Lighting concerns
Lighting emerged as one of the main concerns, with the audit identifying 520 parks that require additional illumination. The DDA said work was being taken up on priority in some of these parks, while night patrolling had begun in 245 major parks and bike patrols had been started in all high-risk parks.
The authority has also identified 323 parks for installation of CCTV cameras. According to officials, security measures were being strengthened at park entrances, with 163 parks requiring gates to be made lockable. Boundary walls and missing grills have also been taken up for repair in several parks.
“Biometric attendance for security guards is active in 602 parks,” the release stated. The authority said it was preparing standard operating procedures covering patrolling, guard performance, attendance and incident reporting and coordination with the police. A dashboard has also been set up to track the safety measures.
