Organs harvested from a brain-dead road accident victim by a team of doctors at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) in Tiruchi helped save lives on Thursday.
According to an official release, a man in his thirties from Kalladai village in Karur district was admitted to MGMGH on January 18 with a brain haemorrhage he suffered when he was injured in a road accident on January 17. When the patient did not respond to treatment, he was declared brain dead.
With counseling and the consent of the bereaved family, arrangements were made to harvest the eyes, kidneys, liver, and skin tissue from the man as per the norms of Tamil Nadu Transplant Authority (TRANSTAN) by MGMGH.
Under the guidance of S. Kumaravel, dean, K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College, MGMGH, renal surgeon Jayprakash Narayanan, and others, on Thursday one of the harvested kidneys was transplanted into a patient who had been undergoing dialysis at the hospital for the past two years. The eyes were transplanted to a beneficiary at the Tiruchi hospital as well.
The other kidney was sent to the Thanjavur Government Medical College while the liver was sent to a patient at a private hospital in Perambalur. The skin tissue was sent to a private hospital in Madurai, said the release.
The mortal remains of the organ donor were laid to rest with full honours.
