With passenger traffic surging during the Dasara festival season, the Transport Department in Visakhapatnam district has stepped up enforcement against private Contract Carriage (CC) buses, collecting fines totalling to ₹8,76,380 during a month-long special inspection drive.
According to officials, 96 cases were booked between September 11 and October 10 after motor vehicle teams conducted checks across major transit hubs and highway corridors.
The drive focused on violations such as operating without valid permits, breach of permit conditions, non-payment of motor vehicle taxes, defective or blocked emergency exit doors and other statutory and road safety lapses.
According to the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) officials, the special drive will continue till the end of the month to ensure safety of passengers travelling to and from their native towns and workplace during the festival rush.
Transport authorities have also urged private bus fleet operators and management agencies to prioritise passenger safety. Owners have been directed to strictly comply with all permit regulations, tax payments, ensure vehicle fitness certifications, and statutory road safety guidelines.
