Over 88,000 students benefit under breakfast scheme in Erode district

As many as 88,054 students in 1,631 schools in Erode district will benefit from the expansion of the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme to Classes VI to VIII, Minister for Handlooms, Textiles and Khadi M. Vijay Balaji said on Tuesday (September 22, 2026).

The Minister served breakfast to students at the Kamarajar Government Higher Secondary School in Karungalpalayam here following the launch of the scheme’s expansion by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay at Chennai. The expansion will cover 28,984 additional students in 423 schools.

Already, 59,070 students in Classes I to VIII from 1,208 schools in the district are covered under the scheme. The scheme is intended to ensure that students attend school without hunger, improve their cognitive development and attendance, and help retain them in schools. It also provides nutritional support to children and is expected to benefit working mothers. Mr. Vijay Balaji served breakfast to the students and joined them for the meal. MLAs and local body representatives also participated in the programme and served breakfast to students in their respective constituencies.

Collector S. Kandasamy presided over the programme. Corporation Commissioner Arpit Jain, Project Director of the District Rural Development Agency Senthilkumar, Chief Educational Officer E. Manvizhi and other officials were among those present.
