Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who visited Tiruchi on Friday to flag off the “Samathuva Nadaipayanam” of MDMK general secretary Vaiko, was accorded a warm reception by DMK cadres and members of the public from the Tiruchi airport to the Uzhavar Sandhai grounds at Thennur Anna Nagar.
As the Chief Minister’s convoy moved slowly through the city, he acknowledged party workers and the public gathered along the route by waving his hands towards them.
Vehicular movement slowed considerably in areas which were closer to the meeting point at Uzhavar Sandhai. There were traffic jams in Palakkarai, Thennur flyover, Puthur, and near the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH), causing inconvenience to commuters during the morning peak hours.
R. Kamaraj, an autorickshaw driver from Tiruchi, said he was stranded for over 45 minutes between Palakkarai and the Head Post Office area.
Several commuters also reported delays because of the limited availability of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) buses between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. Buses that operated during this period were reportedly overcrowded.
However, a senior TNSTC official in Tiruchi said there were no disruptions in scheduled services. “Our buses were operated on time. Some private buses had deviated from their routes due to traffic diversions,” the official said.
