A drinking water pipeline under the Pillur II scheme running beneath Sathyamangalam Road at Amman Nagar Junction near Saravanampatti in Coimbatore city burst on Wednesday night, sending a large volume of water onto the road.

The rupture occurred around 11.30 p.m., and vehicles passing through the area had to navigate the gushing water. After receiving information, Coimbatore Corporation officials shut off water flow through the affected pipeline to prevent further wastage.

Repair works began immediately, starting with dewatering the pipe. Officials said the rupture may have been caused by material fatigue and corrosion, as the pipeline has been in service for around 40 years, reducing its structural strength over time.

This is the second burst of the same pipeline near Saravanampatti in the city within a short period, following a similar incident in November.

A municipal official said, “A six-metre section of the feeder main pipe needs to be replaced. Repair work is expected to be completed within two days. Traffic movement will be restored, and water is currently being supplied through an alternate pipeline. Once repairs are completed, normal water supply will resume through the main line.”
