An ongoing manpower audit and restructuring exercise in the Telangana Police has brought 376 personnel back into the available force and is expected to save the government around ₹90 crore, Director General of Police C.V. Anand said on Friday.
The personnel had been deployed with various retired employees and have now been brought back into the available manpower pool. The exercise has also freed up 20 bullet-proof vehicles, seven Fortuners, 18 Innova Crystas and 58 other four-wheelers, the DGP said.
As part of the exercise, the department also withdrew the 60% additional payment being made to 573 personnel of the Greyhounds and OCTOPUS wings. This measure alone is estimated to save ₹28.16 crore, while the overall savings from various restructuring measures are pegged at around ₹90 crore.
Restructuring of units including Greyhounds and the Special Intelligence Branch has also made personnel available for deployment elsewhere depending on operational requirements, he said.
Mr. Anand reviewed the shortage of Home Guards, recruitment, the election of a new IPS Officers’ Association, CURE area community-connect programmes and administrative, budgetary and welfare matters.
The meeting also discussed preparations for the Southern Regional DGPs’ Conference, which Telangana Police is scheduled to host in October. Cybercrime, drug trafficking, Left Wing Extremism, organised crime, coastal security and emerging crime trends are expected to figure in the deliberations.
The DGP also announced plans to roll out the ‘Fit Cop’ programme across Telangana. It will include basic health screening and awareness about thyroid disorders, diabetes, nutrition and dietary habits, with personnel having health issues to be identified early and provided medical support.
The availability of senior-level posts and pending promotions were also reviewed. According to the department, there are 48 posts at the IG level and above in the state, of which 24 are currently available, while there are 11 DIG-level posts and another 10 could be added in future.
Ahead of Police Commemoration Day on October 21, the DGP proposed week-long programmes honouring police personnel who died in the line of duty. Blood donation camps and open houses, besides awareness programmes on cybercrime, drug abuse and child safety, are planned as part of the initiative.
