Police seek drone from Corporation for surveillance at Semmozhi Poonga

With the 45-acre Semmozhi Poonga becoming a key leisure spot in Coimbatore city, the police are mooting measures to ensure safety of the public and prevent miscreants from misusing the area after visiting hours.

City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar said on Wednesday that the police have sought the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation to provide a drone equipped with a thermal imaging camera for night surveillance at Semmozhi Poonga. This is intended to check possible illegal entry of miscreants into the park and misusing the place. 

“The Corporation Commissioner has agreed to provide a drone with thermal imaging camera, which can be used to scan the vast park area at night,” he said.

The park has a surveillance network of over 50 cameras. Police personnel are deployed at the park for law and order management during weekends, when the number of visitors is high, based on requirements. On December 15, over 27,400 people visited the park. 

Mr. Sundar added that no decision was made on establishing a police outpost at the park as of now.

Meanwhile, the city police and the Corporation are working together to reduce the traffic congestion occurring along one side of Dr. Nanjappa Road due to the crowd visiting the park.
