The police have stepped up flash inspections on national and State highways to track the movement of unaccounted money carriers. The action comes in the wake of the recent seizure of over ₹1 crore in two different operations in the north Kerala region.
Agents dealing with large-scale purchase of land and luxury vehicles are reportedly linked to unaccounted money carriers. The bank accounts of such agents are under the scrutiny of the Income Tax department.
According to the police, involvement of drug traffickers and smugglers is also suspected in the latest spike in unaccounted money transfers. All patrol squads have been asked to intercept suspicious vehicles and conduct detailed inspection, they said.
The police have also identified instances where vehicles were altered to create secret storage spaces inside them to evade the eyes of checking squads. If exposed, those who extended help for such illegal modifications will also be held answerable, they said.
Records available with the police revealed that unaccounted money to the tune of ₹10 crore had been seized in the past five years from the Malabar region. The large-scale seizure was made during flash inspections by the local police, special squads, and the Income Tax department.
A senior police officer said attempts to woo youngsters as carriers offering lucrative commission and other benefits had already come to light. “The same trickery is reportedly adopted to reactivate the carriers’ network. Many are unaware of the seriousness of the crime and the misuse of such funds for anti-national activities,” he added.
As part of heightened vigil, the police are frequently monitoring the call detail records of people who were earlier arrested or linked to those who were arrested in connection with alleged unaccounted money transfers. The Customs and Excise departments are also part of the operations. All suspicious inter-State vehicles will be screened on the district borders with the support of the local police and highway patrol squads.
