The police have issued a notice summoning former Thodupuzha municipal Chairman Saneesh George for interrogation following his detention on suspicion of drug abuse on Thursday (September 17, 2026).
According to the police, Mr. George was taken into custody from Kodikkulam, near Thodupuzha, during a search operation conducted by the District Anti-Narcotics Special Action Force (DANSAF) as part of the Stateās ongoing anti-drug drive āOperation Toofanā.
An official attached to the Kanjar Police Station stated that drug related paraphernalia was seized from the former municipal chairman. āSynthetic drugs were not found on Georgeās person. However, a notice under relevant legal provisions has been served directing him to appear for detailed questioning,ā the officer said.
In 2020, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) captured power in the Thodupuzha municipality by backing George, who had contested as a Congress rebel, for the post of chairman. He was unseated in 2024 after being named the second accused in a bribery case, following which he returned to the Congress party.
Meanwhile, Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) activists staged a protest march to the Thodupuzha Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) office on Thursday, alleging that authorities were attempting to shield Mr. George from the drug case.
