Poultry farmers across the State converged at Palladam in Tiruppur district on Thursday to discuss the modalities of the State-wide strike they have planned from January 1, 2026.
The poultry farmers have been urging broiler industries to revise rearing rate., and highlighting other demands.
The farmers are going ahead with stoppage of production as the government has not responded to their appeal for fulfilment of their 10-point charter of demands. The farmers adopted a resolution deciding to carry out a sit-in protest in front of the office of Director of Animal Husbandry Department from January 7.
According to the farmers, the rearing rates have remained stagnant for the last four years and must be increased to ₹15 a kg for boiler chicken, ₹20 a kg for farm country chicken and ₹5 a bird for quail.
A Protest Committee constituted by the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Padhukappu Sangam has demanded tripartite talks between government, broiler chicken industries and poultry farmers for revision of foster charges.
The speakers at the meeting analysed the gradual curtailment of the production of broiler chicken by farmers in their own lands due to the high costs of electricity, feed, medication, labour, water and other maintenance expenses.
The speakers said many poultry farmers were on the verge of bankruptcy due to the backlog of unsettled loans and interest payments.
Their demands included scrapping of FCR (Feed Conversion Ratio) method, provision of free power, formation of a welfare board for poultry farmers.
Seeking revision of rearing rates on an annual basis, the farmers also wanted the broiler industries to meet the cost of medicines, and the feed with adequate protein content.
