One of the highlights of the 77th Republic Day celebration in Mysuru was the participation of pourakarmikas in the march past held at the Torch Light Parade Ground at Bannimantap on January 26.
A contingent of pourakarmikas, or the civic workers, who play a key role in keeping the city clean, was among the 24 contingents that participated in the Republic Day parade in Mysuru. Contingents from KSRP, CAR, DAR, women’s police of Mysuru city, Fire and Emergency Services, NCC, Scouts and Guides, Home Guards and Bharat Seva Dal also participated in the march past.
Minister in charge of Mysuru district H. C. Mahadevappa, who hoisted the national flag and inaugurated the celebrations, said Mysuru city now has the ambitious goal of obtaining ‘7-Star Garbage Free City’ certification under the Swachch Survekshan 2025-26.
“I request the cooperation of all citizens to achieve this goal through 100% waste segregation at the household level, reduction in single-use plastic, scientific waste management, cleanliness of public places, and active participation of schools, markets, offices and institutions in keeping the city clean,” he said.
During the cultural programme organized as part of the Republic Day celebrations, students of Teresian Convent Girls’ High School performed a dance to the song ‘Namo Namo Bharatambe’ while students of DAV Public School performed a dance to a patriotic song on the theme of unity in diversity.
Students of Mahabodhi School presented a dance on Atmanirbhar Bharat while students of Capitol Public School danced to the ‘Vande Mataram’ song.
Former Minister and MLA representing Narasimharaja Assembly segment Tanveer Sait presided over the event, which was attended by Chamarajanagar MP Sunil Bose, Karnataka Exhibition Authority Chairperson Ayub Khan, Regional Commissioner Nitesh Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Mysuru G. Lakshmikant Reddy, Mysuru city Police Commissioner Seema Latkar, Mysuru Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer S. Yukesh Kumar, Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) Commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif, Superintendent of Mysuru district police Mallikarjun Baladandi and Additional Deputy Commissioner of Mysuru P. Shivaraju.
