The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is hoping to keep October free of electricity curbs with emergency electricity supplies from Himachal Pradesh to meet the peak demand.

According to KSEB officials, supplies ranging between 600 MW and 800 MW have been ensured through the Directirate of Energy, Himachal Pradesh, for October. This will help the KSEB meet the peak demand, they said.

The power utility is also in talks with the northern State for supplies to cover November and December as well. After a break, power curbs had made a reappearance in the last week of September.

On Wednesday, Keralam had experienced a shortage of 900 MW, prompting the KSEB to impose power curbs. Peak demand was recorded at 5,459 MW, the highest in September.

Throughout September, daily consumption had remained on a high note. Consumption during the 30-day period averaged 94.03 million units (mu). Electricity imports continued to account for the larger share of the demand met. Imports averaged 71.33 mu, show the KSEB’s load dispatch centre data.

With the June-September southwest monsoon weak over Keralam, the water storage in the hydel reservoirs has not seen much improvement. On September 30, storage stood at 61%, or equivalent to 2,537.47 mu. On the same day in 2025, it stood at 3,267.63 mu.
