Representatives of the Praja Arogya Vedika met Minister for Health, Medical and Family Welfare Satya Kumar Yadav on Monday and submitted a memorandum highlighting key challenges facing the State’s healthcare sector.
The delegation, comprising State general secretary T. Kameswara Rao and State organising secretary G. Vijay Prakash, discussed issues affecting public healthcare and urged the government to initiate policy and administrative measures to strengthen government health services.
According to a press release, the Minister assured the delegation that he would make every effort to improve healthcare services in the State.
The memorandum referred to a State-level round-table conference held in Vijayawada on August 2, at which participants unanimously adopted a nine-point resolution calling for major reforms in the public health system.
The resolution sought enactment of a Right to Health Act to guarantee universal access to quality healthcare as a legal right, withdrawal of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements in government medical colleges and hospitals, a substantial increase in public health spending in line with World Health Organization recommendations, and expeditious completion and full operationalisation of all under-construction government medical colleges.
The resolution said safeguarding public health was the government’s primary responsibility and asserted that privatisation and insurance-based healthcare models could not substitute for a strong and accountable public healthcare system. It urged the Andhra Pradesh government to consider and implement the recommendations in the larger public interest.
