The Prakasam police on Wednesday (March 25) destroyed over 100 modified silencers and 400 unauthorised headlights of two-wheelers that had been seized during a special drive. In the presence of Superintendent of Police V. Harshavardhan Raju, they were crushed using a road roller on the premises of the district police office in Ongole.
With an aim of implementing road safety rules and controlling noise pollution, the special drive was conducted in the town over the past four months. As part of this drive, modified silencers of two-wheelers that made excessive noise were removed. Similarly, unauthorised lights that emit excessive light were also taken out by the traffic police.
Realising that a reason for road accidents was the lack of clear visibility for oncoming motorists, the police officers took special measures against headlights arranged on two-wheelers and autorickshaws in contravention of the standards permitted by the government. The SP warned against the installation of lights that emit too much light or in a way that causes inconvenience to others.
He advised motorists to strictly follow traffic rules and behave responsibly. He warned that actions such as driving on the wrong side of the highway and showing negligence while overtaking can lead to accidents. He appealed to the public to develop awareness about traffic rules and cooperate with the police.
Mr. Harshavardhan Raju has taken several innovative steps with the main objective of reducing road accidents in the district. To spread awareness on road safety rules and traffic regulations among the motorists, a public addressing system is being used at toll gates, Ongole Town and other key areas.
