Collector N. Mirunalini on Sunday said priority would be accorded to ensure regular supply of drinking water to the residents of all areas in the district.

She said there were over 31,000 people living in 18 wards of Ariyalur municipality. The main water supply station located on the banks of Kollidam, Thirumanur, catered to Ariyalur. Water was chlorinated in five overhead water tanks in the municipality and then distributed daily. The impact of El Nino was being closely monitored, Ms. Mirunalini said and added that there was no short supply of water in any part of Ariyalur. Officials had been given instruction to closely monitor the yield at the source points on a daily basis. Average yield would be maintained to sustain regular supply of drinking water to the residents.

She said the chlorination level in drinking water should be monitored by water managers. The overhead water tanks were cleaned once every 15 days. Plastic tanks with power pumps were in use at 58 places in the municipal areas. In case of any damage to the water supply pipe, alternative arrangements were in place to ensure regular drinking water. If needed, supply would be maintained through tankers.

The Collector said officials would carry out random checks on the quality of drinking water. Samples would collected to check chlorine level. Officials of the municipalities, town panchayats, and panchayat unions had been given instructions to tackle drinking water issues, if any, on priority.
