The government has sought Central funds for modernising, technology infusion, and expansion of the police force for augmenting the security infrastructure in the Union Territory of Puducherry.
In a Demi-Official (D.O.) letter addressed to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) that was submitted to Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai, Puducherry Home Minister A. Namassivayam sought the immediate clearance of several high-priority police welfare and modernisation projects.
The Home Minister sought the formal release of ₹2 crore under the Assistance to States and Union Territories for the Modernisation of Police Scheme for a four-lane firing simulator and specialised prison vans. Additionally, the letter pointed out that a ₹97.15 lakh proposal awaited final approval with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for high-tech tools-including night vision drones, narcotics detectors, and spy cameras to combat drug-related crimes effectively.
Mr. Namassivayam urged the MHA to approve the creation of 88 ASI posts. This restructuring is essential to fill over 100 Sub-Inspector vacancies currently stalled due to a lack of feeder cadre personnel and pressed for the early sanction of the Second India Reserve Battalion (IRBn), which would add 1,007 new posts to the force, significantly enhancing the territory’s internal security capabilities. It will also create job opportunities for the local youth.
The Home Minister also followed up on the pending proposal to confer the prestigious ‘Presidential Colour’ upon the Puducherry Police, seen as an honour in recognition of the department’s long-standing record of exemplary service.
