The Mahila Court in Coimbatore on Monday sentenced a man hailing from Pudukkottai to life imprisonment for murdering a 20-year-old woman, after sexually assaulting her in her residence in the city in 2021.
Judge V. Sundararaj awarded the punishment to Jegan, 31, of Aranthangi in Pudukkottai district. He had been residing at Nanjundapuram near Somanur in Coimbatore district while working in a private company.
According to the police, his wife had been employed at a fruit shop, where the deceased woman also worked.
The woman, who lived within the jurisdiction of the Saibaba Colony police station, was found dead in her residence on November 2, 2021. Post-mortem examination revealed that the woman had been sexually assaulted, before being strangled to death.
The police found that Jegan had visited the house on the day of the murder. During interrogation, Jegan confessed that he murdered the woman after she refused to marry him.
The court found him guilty of the crime and awarded life imprisonment on Monday. B. Jisha appeared for the prosecution.Â
