Rachakonda police booked more than 300 motorists for drunk driving during a special weekend enforcement drive conducted across the commissionerate limits between December 22 and December 28.
Police said that the traffic wing carried out extensive checks as part of the special drive, leading to the seizure of two-wheelers, cars and auto rickshaws from offenders found driving under the influence of alcohol. All those caught were booked and will be produced before the court as per law.
Officials said a majority of the motorists were found with blood alcohol concentration levels ranging from 35 mg per 100 ml to 200 mg per 100 ml, while a smaller number recorded significantly higher levels. Police reiterated that driving under the influence of alcohol poses a serious risk to public safety and will attract strict legal action.
Traffic police also said courts disposed of several drunk driving cases in the previous week, imposing fines totalling ₹2,07,500.
The Rachakonda police warned that if an accident results in death due to drunk driving, a case will be registered under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and carries punishment extending up to ten years of imprisonment along with a fine.
