Rains cool Visakhapatnam; holiday declared for educational institutions today

Continuous rain under the influence of a depression over the Bay of Bengal brought considerable relief from the prevailing heat in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday. The wet spell raised hopes of improved groundwater recharge levels and higher water levels in water bodies if the rain continues for a few more days.

With heavy rainfall forecast for Wednesday, all educational institutions in the district have been directed to remain closed on September 23.

Moderate to heavy rain was reported across the city from Monday night, with several areas receiving steady showers through Tuesday. The rain brought down temperatures, but also caused waterlogging, overflowing drains and inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians at several places.

According to rainfall data recorded by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Government of Andhra Pradesh, Madhurawada recorded the highest rainfall in the city and its surrounding areas, receiving 70 mm between 8.30 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Gambheeram recorded 65 mm, followed by Pendurthi and Kapuluppada with 63 mm each. Chavulamadham recorded 57 mm, while Butchirajupalem (Gopalapatnam), Yendada, Anandapuram and Sheela Nagar recorded 56 mm each. Bheemunipatnam received 54 mm, Seethammadhara 47 mm, Pedagantyada 46 mm and Simhachalam Hill 42 mm during the period.

According to the district administration, the average rainfall recorded in the district on Tuesday was 66.2 mm, while the average rainfall since September 21 stood at 82.2 mm.

The rain brought some inconvenience to motorists and parents taking children to and from schools in the morning and afternoon. Several roads were inundated with rainwater, and drains overflowed at some locations, including the stretches of NH-16.

Potholes that had remained submerged or less visible earlier resurfaced with the rain, particularly in Sheela Nagar, Tunglam, Kurmannapalem, Sujatha Nagar, Pendurthi, Vepagunta, Akkireddipalem and Gajuwaka. The road restoration works taken up after underground drainage (UGD) works also added to the difficulties in some areas, with stretches turning slippery after the rain.

Meanwhile, the rain brought cheer to many residents. People stepped out to take photographs and videos of the weather and shared them on social media.

A high tide was also witnessed along the coast. Despite the rough conditions, people gathered at RK Beach, prompting community guards to ask them to leave the beach area as a precautionary measure.

With the depression likely to intensify further and heavy rainfall expected over the next few days, District Collector M. Abhishikt Kishore reviewed the preparedness of various departments on Tuesday evening, and asked them to be on high alert.
