Fishermen led by CITU –Marine Workers Union staged a sit-in protest on the Rameswaram Tahsildar office premises demanding the retrieval of land traditionally used by fishermen on the Thangachimadam Ariyankundu beach.
District Secretary N.P. Senthil stated, “Revenue department officials have fraudulently transferred the patta of the land, which has been used by fishermen for the past three generations to moor boats and weave nets on the Thangachimadam Ariyankundu beach near Rameswaram, to an individual.”
The person who newly purchased that place used a crane to demolish and destroy the fishermen’s union shed and board, he added.
He urged that a case be registered against the persons involved in this act and that the patta transfer granted for the land used by the fishermen be cancelled.
A compromise talk was held with the fishermen under the leadership of Rameswaram Tahsildar Muralidharan and Thangachimadam Inspector Mahesh.
The protest was temporarily withdrawn after officials assured that action would be taken on the demands of the fishermen, he stated.
