The real power is vested with the people in a democratic fabric, said Virudhunagar District Collector N. O. Sukhaputra here on Saturday.

Speaking at the gram sabha meeting held at Kundalpatti village in the district, he said that the people’s participation in such meetings was significant as it was their responsibility to ensure that the public servants and the funds were spent judiciously and in a transparent manner.

The officials had the accountability and should thus execute the works – be it welfare oriented or development related, he said and urged the people to learn about the various welfare programs intended for them by the government.

Only when the people or the common man was empowered, it would give real meaning to a successful administration in a democratic set up. Hence, he called for fullest participation in the meetings like gram sabha.

The meeting discussed various issues, including distribution of potable water, need for anganwadi centres and about the elimination of drugs and other menace. The people, who were homeless also appealed for assistance from the government at the meeting.

The Collector and other officials from the panchayat administration assured to take stock of the eligible people and provide them with the welfare schemes.
