The combined research of the spine surgery and radiology department of Ganga Hospital has won the prestigious North American Spine Society Outstanding Research Paper Award for 2026, a hospital release said on Sunday.
The research was on a cutting edge specialised MRI sequence that could predict the post-operative recovery in compressions of the cervical spinal cord requiring surgery. The paper was titled ‘Preoperative Metabolite Ratio Improves Prediction of Post Operative Recovery in Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy: A Prospective Cohort Study’. The study used magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), an advanced radiological MRI sequence that is capable of documenting the concentration of various important metabolites in the spinal cord.
The research was carried out by R. Karthik, Ajoy Shetty, Pushpa B.T., Harikrishna, Swathika, Rishi Kanna, and S. Rajasekaran. The award includes a prize money of USD10,000 and the results will be published as a lead paper in The Spine Journal. The award will be presented during the 41st Annual Meeting of the North American Spine Society in San Antonio, Texas, U.S., on October 15. This is the fifth time the hospital has won the award, the release added.
