Residents in merged areas can apply online for water, sewer connections

To encourage residents of the merged areas to obtain water and sewerage connections, Chennai Metrowater has outlined the procedures and charges involved in receiving them. Applications, along with the required documents, must be submitted online, according to the water agency.

Metrowater has been executing projects to expand its water supply and sewer network in the merged areas. Areas provided with piped water supply infrastructure include Idayanchavadi, Porur, Madhavaram, Kottivakkam, Madipakkam, Sholinganallur and Neelankarai. Similarly, areas such as Nerkundram, Manapakkam, and Uthandi have been provided with sewer network, a press release said.

Officials said several residents had raised queries regarding the procedures to obtain connections in localities where the water supply and sewer networks had been completed. On average, the water agency receives about 2,000 applications for house service connections.

The online process (on https://wsc.chennaimetrowater.in/#/nc/login) has been simplified to enable residents to apply and remit charges, and the connections would be provided within 15 days of verification.

According to a press release, residents can apply online with documents such as the property tax assessment order and the infrastructure development charges receipt.

Connection charges

Water and sewer connection charges of ₹5,000 each will be collected from individual houses measuring between 46.47 sq.m. and 100 sq.m., and ₹7,500 each from residential buildings measuring up to 200 sq.m.

Similarly, ₹7,500 will be collected for new connections to commercial and partly commercial establishments and for the renewal of old connections.

The water agency would collect infrastructure development charges of ₹319 per sq.m. from two-storey residential buildings, multi-storey buildings with more than six units, and commercial buildings measuring more than 300 sq.m., the release said.

G. Sathish, a resident of Semmencheri, said several residents in the southern suburbs had been waiting for piped water supply and sewer network for many years.

“The online process has made applying for connections easier and helps avoid visits to Metrowater offices. The facility to pay connection and road cut charges in 10 instalments will encourage more residents to apply for new connections. Residents in various areas are waiting for sewer infrastructure and comprehensive works will help create sustainable civic infrastructure,” he said.
