Residents of Karukkalacherry on Wednesday staged a road blockade in protest against the Karaikal Fishing Port expansion project.
The existing fishing port was built at a cost of ₹47.74 crore in 2012 at the junction of Arasalaru and Mullaiyaru in Karaikal. The Central government has approved the expansion of the fishing port at a cost of ₹130.17 crore. However, the residents of Karukkalacherry have been opposing the expansion scheme, claiming that port activities would disturb their livelihood. They have been insisting that the expansion project should be built 150 metres further north so that it would not affect Karukkalacherry village.
To register their protest, the residents staged a road blockade on Nagapattinam-Chidambaram National Highway at Ammalchathram in Karaikal. On information, Niravi police rushed to the spot and arrested about 300 people including women, social activists and members of political parties.
