A group of residents gathered at the Perambur MLA office, protesting against a delay in development of civic infrastructure in some parts of Kodungaiyur.
The residents demanded creation of civic infrastructure, including roads, streetlights, and sewer network in Bala Avenue Residential Area, Vedanta Murugappa Nayakkan Street, Selavoyal, Kodungaiyur.
The residents from parts of Ward 36 said they have requested the government to resolve the civic issues caused by litigation pertaining to the residential area because they were paying property tax to the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) for the houses built in the layout. “Public health risk is high because of the delay in development of a sewer network. The risk of communicable diseases for children in the neighborhood is high. Sewage stagnation is a major issue. We request roads and streetlights also,” said Varun Kumar, a resident.
Officials have asked the residents to wait for two weeks to resolve the issue, he said. Ravi Kumar, another resident, said the residents visited the MLA office as they were confident of receiving help to get basic amenities for 150 families in the neighborhood. omen who participated in the protest demanded that GCC install streetlights in the area.
A senior official of GCC said: “There is a civil case pending and the layout is unapproved. One of the parties has obtained a stay as well. Chennai Corporation zonal officer and Housing Board Chairman held talks with the protesters.”
