BRS senior MLA and former minister T. Harish Rao has accused the Congress government of enabling the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh government to plunder Telangana’s water resources in the name of the Polavaram–Nallamalasagar Link Project (PNLP) through its imprudent actions. He demanded that the State government exert pressure on the Centre by staging a protest in front of the Central Water Commission (CWC), which, he alleged, had granted permission to A.P. to use 200 TMC ft of water from the Godavari.
Addressing a press conference at the party State office on Tuesday, Mr. Rao alleged that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is assisting the Andhra Pradesh government because N. Chandrababu Naidu is his political mentor. He also accused Mr. Reddy of making blatant false statements regarding the meeting convened by the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti, which was attended by the Chief Ministers and Irrigation Ministers of both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on July 16, 2025 in New Delhi.
“Mr. Revanth Reddy initially said he would not attend the meeting, but he did. He later claimed that the Godavari–Banakacharla link was not on the agenda, yet it was included. Although he asserted that the topic was not discussed, it was indeed deliberated at the meeting, and Revanth Reddy even signed the related documents,” Mr. Rao said. He added that the Andhra Pradesh government had indeed withdrawn the Polavaram–Banakacharla Link Project after Karnataka and Maharashtra stated they would claim their share of water under the Bachawat Tribunal award if water was diverted from the Godavari to the Krishna.
“In light of this, the Andhra Pradesh government is now proposing the Polavaram–Nallamalasagar Link Project (PNLP). However, this new project would severely harm Telangana’s water interests,” he said, demanding the Congress government to take immediate steps to prevent Andhra Pradesh from executing the project.
Mr. Rao also criticised the State government for appointing retired IAS officer and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary Adityanath Das as the head of a committee to resolve water disputes between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. He demanded Das’s removal from the committee, alleging that he had previously acted against Telangana’s water interests.
