Rice millers in Kangayam demand government warehouse

Rice millers in Kangayam have urged the Central and State governments to establish a government warehouse at Kangayam for agricultural commodities.

With more than 100 rice mills and a large number of oil processing units, Kangayam see a large transaction of agricultural commodities throughout the year. There are a number of private warehouses at Kangayam. However, a government warehouse will help the rice mills and the oil processing units by saving on costs, said the rice millers.

An official at the Tiruppur district administration said the size of the oil processing industry is almost as big as the rice mills. The oil processing units source raw material – copra and other agricultural commodities from other districts and States. Similarly, the rice mills also get paddy from other States and districts. The sourcing of these commodities is high during the harvest seasons and these are stored to be processed throughout the year. The processed oil and rice are also stored for sales throughout the year.

“We want a warehouse with modern facilities as available in other major agricultural centres,” one of the rice millers said.

“The demand of the rice mills is genuine. We can take it forward if there is a project proposal from the industry,” the official said.
