Various coastal parts of Tamil Nadu experienced monsoon-like weather conditions on Saturday, with moderate rainfall punctuated by isolated heavy spells.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has predicted wet weather to continue until Monday. Nine districts- Chengalpattu, Tiruvannamalai, Namakkal, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Ramanathapuram, Cuddalore and Salem – are likely to receive heavy rainfall on Sunday.
During the past 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Saturday, various places in and around Chennai received mild rainfall. The rain gauges in places such as Medavakkam, Pallikaranai, Mamallapuram, Perungudi, Manali New Town, Velachery and Nungambakkam recorded 1 cm of rainfall.
Rains and overcast sky kept chill in check as various places like Chennai, Tiruchi and Salem recorded above normal minimum temperatures. Coimbatore airport recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 18.9 degrees Celsius in the plains of Tamil Nadu. Udhagamandalam registered the coldest temperature of 6.4 degrees Celsius among the hilly areas. The RMC has noted that the minimum temperature would be above normal by 2-3 degree Celsius in a few pockets of T.N. and Puducherry till Monday.
Officials of the RMC said a trough in easterlies lying over the southwest Bay of Bengal off the T.N.-Sri Lanka coast would influence scattered rainfall. The heavy rainfall forecast was revised according to the movement of the weather system. Dry weather will return by Tuesday.
Tamil Nadu has received 26 mm of rainfall, which is a surplus compared to its average of 10.8 mm, since January 1. Many districts like Ariyalur, Chennai, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Erode, Salem and Sivaganga also registered excess rainfall so far this month.
The RMC has forecast Chennai will experience moderate rainfall with thunderstorms in some areas on Sunday.
