In a swift action, Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel from Madurai and Virudhunagar nabbed an elderly couple at Virudhunagar bus stand after they were fleeing with a bag containing 26 sovereigns of gold and ₹50,000 absent-mindedly left behind on a train by a woman passenger who got down at Koodal Nagar railway station here on Saturday.
The missing valuables were found in-tact and the couple were produced before a court. The Judicial Officer let them go on bail considering their advanced age.
According to RPF sources, the passenger on Mahal Express, S. Mahadevi of Tambaram, had got down at Koodal Nagar railway station on Saturday morning. She had left behind her bag with the valuables in the rear general compartment of the train.
She immediately reported it to the Station Master at Koodal Nagar, who, in turn, alerted the RPF personnel in Madurai.
RPF personnel checked the rear coach when the train arrived but could not find the bag. Meanwhile, Mahadevi rushed to Madurai railway junction. RPF and GRP personnel went through the CCTV footage and noticed that the elderly couple were walking with the same bag.
The CCTV footage showed the couple later boarding a special train bound to Kanniyakumari.
The RPF personnel at Virudhunagar were alerted. RPF personnel then made an enquiry with autorickshaw drivers in Virudhunagar and found out that the couple had gone to Virudhunagar bus stand.
Soon, the team rushed to the bus stand and found the couple there with the bag and the valuables.
The couple were handed over to Government Railway Police for further action based on the complaint lodged by the woman passenger.
