The District Designated Officer (Food Safety) has issued Prohibition and Recall Orders under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 against Tata Tea Kanan Devan Classic Tea as it contained pesticides more than the prescribed maximum residue level.
The prohibition and recall order issued on Wednesday will be in force in Virudhunagar district.
In a statement, Designated Officer S. Mariappan has said that as part of collection of 60 legal samples every month, food safety officials collected samples of Tata Tea Kanan Devan Classic Tea in July. The food analysis report said the tea contained two pesticides, Acetamiprid and Cypermethrin, more than the prescribed maximum residue level that would cause health hazard.
Based on the report, the Designated Officer has ordered prohibition of its sale within Virudhunagar district. Besides, he has ordered the manufacturer to recall the stocks. After getting consent from the Commissioner of Food Safety, legal action will be initiated against the persons concerned and company under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The tea will be allowed to be sold again in Virudhunagar district only after the manufacturer sets right the anomaly in the quality of tea and submit the report on its quality from a recognised laboratory.
