Sapna Book House, a leading brand in publishing and sale of books, marked a major milestone by launching 70 Kannada works at its Mysuru branch and across several cities in Karnataka, on December 27.
Speaking at the event, writer and critic Pradhan Gurudutt said the publishing house has rendered yeoman service to the cause of Kannada literature over several decades.
“Very few institutions can match its sustained output. What it does more is propagate literature rather than the business of publishing and selling. It has been known for the quality of its books,’’ he added.
Publishing and launching 70 books at the same time is no small achievement as it involves complex logistics, including coordinating with authors, editors, printers, and distributors. “Such an exercise itself reflects the institutional strength and commitment of the publishers,” said Mr. Gurudutt.
A release issued by Sapna Book House said 70 Kannada titles, spanning all major genres, have been published to commemorate the 70th Karnataka Rajyotsava. The books include works by senior as well as younger writers, both established and new, drawn from different parts of the State.
Sapna Book House has made a significant contribution to the growth of the Kannada book industry by publishing a large number of representative works every Rajyotsava season in November, honouring writers and offering special discounts on Kannada books, stated the release.
It cited senior litterateurs to point out that few institutions in India have dared to publish so many books in any single language at one time.
The objective behind the initiative is to make books from all fields of knowledge easily accessible to Kannadigas and thereby help strengthen Kannada as a language of everyday life, the release said.
As part of Rajyotsava celebrations, Kannada books were sold at discounted prices at all 24 Sapna Book House outlets across Karnataka during November, and the present programme was organised to formally honour the authors by launching their works, according to the publishing house.
It said the event was special as the 70 books were being launched simultaneously at all branches of Sapna Book House, including in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Hubballi, Kalaburagi, Belagavi, Hassan and Davangere, which, it said, underscored the State-wide scale of the initiative.
T.V. Venkatachala Sastry, scholar, Maddikere Gopal, president, Mysuru District Kannada Sahitya Parishat, and others were present.
