Scientists pledge to develop alternatives to laboratory animals, reduce their use in research

Scientists at the 13th International Conference on ‘Preclinical insights from animal studies on drug discovery and translational research’ pledged to develop alternatives to laboratory animals and to minimise their use in scientific research.

The two-day conference was organised by the Laboratory Animal Scientists’ Association (LASA), India, at GITAM Deemed to be University here on Friday (December 19, 2025).

Scientists specialising in laboratory animal science from various central research organisations participated in the event. While emphasising the need to reduce animal usage, the participants also acknowledged that laboratory animals have played a crucial role in helping researchers understand the underlying mechanisms involved in the development of diseases.

While inaugurating the conference, Varaprasad Reddy, Founder of Shantha Biotechnics Limited, emphasised that global acceptance of Indian-made biologics requires robust quality systems with unquestionable data integrity.

Mr. Reddy stressed that future scientific progress must balance breakthrough research with humane care and called for the rapid development and adoption of alternatives to animal testing.

GITAM Deemed to be University Chancellor Prof. Virander Singh Chauhan said that preclinical research remains essential for understanding disease mechanisms, evaluating drug targets and ensuring safety before clinical trials. He mentioned that ethical and well regulated animal studies continue to be a critical component of drug discovery process.

LASA president Vijay Pal Singh said that laboratory animal science is playing a key role in performing ethical and high quality biomedical research in India. LASA is encouraging innovation and nurturing the next generation of laboratory animal scientists through workshops and training activities, with the aim of strengthening their understanding of global practices and emerging technologies in laboratory animal science.
