Agri and All Trade Chamber and its platform ‘You Export’ (YE) on Saturday organised ‘MDU Rising’, a seminar on the development projects in Madurai at the Agro Food Trade Centre in Sikandar Chavadi.
In her address, Corporation Commissioner Chitra Vijayan said when it comes to Madurai it was Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple. However, the people of the city should step out and come up with ideas for the development of the city. All should come together for the development of the city and without the support of the people it cannot be achieved, she said.
Referring to recent surveys that ranked Madurai among the dirtiest cities in the country, she said everyone was blaming Madurai Corporation. However, the sanitary workers were doing their best to keep the city clean. They were swiftly clearing the garbage. The onus is also on the people to keep the city clean, she said.
On the issue of stray dog menace, she said it was a tricky situation. There were dog lovers on one side and those who complained about dogs on the other side. The Supreme Court has issued directions to follow. community feeders, associations and authorities should come together to tackle the issue, she said.
Divisional Engineer of the Tamil Nadu State Highways Department Mohana Gandhi spoke about the various road development projects under way in the city. He said Tamil Nadu had one of the best road network in the country. He said the recently opened flyover at the Melamadai junction was well received. The flyover at Goripalayam was fast progressing, he said
Presenting data on the highway roads in Madurai district, he said there were 412 km State Highways road, 519 km major district roads and 1,045 km other district roads. There is a total of 1,979 km.
Other road projects such as North Bank road development, Palanganatham and Viraganur will help ease traffic congestion in the city. There were also proposals for more flyovers, he said adding that they welcomed suggestions. He urged people to drive responsibly.
President of Agri and All Trade Chamber S. Rethinavelu and You Export president K. Thirupathi Rajan presented their suggestions at the seminar. In a memorandum submitted to the authorities, they said emphasis on transport and mobility will significantly improve connectivity and reduce congestion. They urged the State government to take immediate and strong corrective measures to make Madurai a clean city.
A high-level committee should be constituted to take measures on a war footing and technology could be used for monitoring, they suggested.
