A senior leader of the outlawed CPI (Maoist), Nakka Susheela Rani alias Latha, surrendered before Nizamabad Police Commissioner P. Sai Chaitanya on Tuesday citing health issues and what she described as increasing government repression.
Susheela was working as a Divisional Committee Member (DCM) and a member of the Education Department Committee (EDC) of the Maad Divisional Committee in Chhattisgarh.
Presenting her before the media at his office in Nizamabad, Mr. Chaitanya said Susheela, a native of Bodhan in Nizamabad district, had gone underground in February 1992 after marrying Sunkara Rammohan Rao, the then secretary of the Maoist Kangal Dalam, in July 1990.
After obtaining a B.Sc. degree from a college in Hyderabad, she joined the Government B.Ed. College at Nagarjuna Sagar in Nalgonda district, but could not appear for the final examinations.
Rammohan Rao was killed in an encounter in the Nallamala forest area in 2001. Susheela subsequently married Samala Venkateshwarlu alias Mallana, a State Committee Member (SCM), in March 2004. Venkateshwarlu was also killed in an encounter in 2006, the CP said.
Susheela joined the CPI-ML People’s War Group (PWG) in February 1992 and worked in different capacities in the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh, he said, adding that she would receive benefits as per the Telangana government’s Maoist rehabilitation policy. He has handed over a cheque worth ₹5 lakh and an interim relief of ₹25,000 cash to the surrendered Maoists leader.
