Free food scheme for benefiting the sanitary workers of the local bodies was launched in Tirunelveli and Tenkasi districts on Monday.

Palayamkottai MLA M. Abdul Wahab inaugurated the free food scheme for the sanitary workers in a function held at Centenary Hall, Palayamkottai in the presence of Mayor G. Ramakrishnan, Commissioner Monika Rana and Deputy Mayor K.R. Raju.

In Tirunelveli Corporation, 2,283 sanitary workers, garbage vehicle drivers and the anti-dengue workers in Thatchanallur, Palayamkottai, Melapalayam and Tirunelveli Zones would be served the free food.

In Tenkasi district, Collector A.K. Kamal Kishore inaugurated the serving of free food to sanitary workers in a function held at Puliyangudi along with Vasudevanallur MLA T. Sadan Thirumalaikumar and had the breakfast with them.

A total of 2,384 sanitary workers – 1,513 persons in Shencottai, Tenkasi, Kadayanallur, Puliyangudi, Sankarankovil and Surandai municipalities and 871 sanitary workers in 17 town panchayats – will be served free breakfast and supper, the Collector said.
