A textile shop near the Salem Town police station was reportedly burgled in the intervening night between Saturday and Sunday (October 4). According to the shop manager, a sum of ₹3.86 lakh was stolen.
According to the police, the shop, located in a bustling locality near the Old Bus Stand, was closed on Saturday night after business hours. When the shop manager, S. Sivanantha Murugan (44) from Marimuthu Street in Ammapet, opened the shop on Sunday morning, he found the lockers broken and ₹3.86 lakh in cash missing.
A police team visited the spot, and forensic experts collected fingerprints from the crime scene.
Police sources said the burglars must have entered the shop through the terrace as no entry point of the shop was broken. The police suspect that someone who knew the shop well might have been involved in the crime. The person must have hidden in the shop during business hours.
Notably, the CCTV cameras inside the shop did not function at night because the shop usually shuts off the power supply while closing the shop to avoid fire accidents due to short circuits.
The town police registered a case and launched an investigation.
