Melattur police have arrested three persons, including a juvenile, in connection with a sand smuggling case on Gandhi Jayanthi Day.
According to the police, on September 30, they received tip off that sand was being smuggled from the waterways from the lands abutting the water body, at Kodukizhi hamlet. Sub-inspector Muthuvel and head constable Raman patrolled the areas abutting the waterway on September 30 night when they spotted a sand-laden tractor.
On spotting the police, the tractor driver knocked them down from their motorcycle and fled the spot in his tractor. The sub-inspector fractured both his legs. Subsequently, on October 2, the Melattur police arrested the tractor driver, a juvenile, the landowner, Ramalingam of Kodukizhi, who allegedly allowed smuggling of land from his land abutting the waterway, and Baskar of Kodukizhi, who allegedly assisted the smuggling of sand from the waterway and its banks. The Melattur police are on the lookout for tractor owner Kumar of Araiyarpuram.
