Siruthuli with the support of Indo-Tech Transformers has taken up a comprehensive project to treat sewage and restore the Sundapalayam stream in Coimbatore district.
According to a press release, the initiative includes cleaning and desilting 1.5 km stretch of the stream, construction of three check dams to enhance water retention, improve percolation, and recharge groundwater. Further, wastewater treatment interventions will be taken up by dosing treatment solutions, along with constructed wetlands and vetiver plantation along the stream bunds. This integrated approach is expected to improve groundwater quality within six months and lead to the complete restoration of the stream.
A press release from Siruthuli said Sundapalayam Periapallam is one of the main rivulets that originates in Marudhamalai hills and drains into River Noyyal. Even today, farming remains a primary occupation, with crops such as coconut, areca nut, banana, and other traditional varieties cultivated along its banks.
Over the years, rapid urban expansion in Sundapalayam has resulted in the generation of a large volume of untreated sewage that is discharged directly into the stream every day. Siruthuli is studying the Sundapalayam stream by assessing the quality and quantity of sewage and exploring feasible wastewater treatment interventions. As part of phase one, vetiver was planted along the stream, yielding encouraging results in improving water quality.
On Wednesday, Siruthuli commenced the comprehensive project. Janakiraman Sarvesvaran, Consul General of India in Sydney, was the chief guest, the press release said.
