Sivaganga District Collector K. Porkodi informed the government school students who have completed Class XII to seek counselling for higher education through their school’s higher education guidance teachers.
A press statement of the district administration, read, “There are 69 Government Higher Secondary Schools in Sivaganga district. In this year’s Class XII board exam results, Sivaganga district has achieved a milestone by securing second place at the State level.”
In this situation, it was said that they received complaints from students that a few private NGOs were contacting government school students, claiming to help them enrol in higher education and secure seats in private colleges through the 7.5% reservation, and are collecting their original Class X certificates.
“Collecting students’ original certificates in such a manner is an offense. Such NGOs maintain ties with certain private colleges and enrol students in those educational institutions,” it claimed.
The statement further noted that the NGOs which initially pay the fees for such students, after a year or two, inform the students that they could no longer pay the fees and that they must pay themselves.
“Subsequently, when students who are unable to pay the fees ask for their original certificates to join elsewhere, they are told that the original documents will only be returned if a specific amount of money is paid,” the statement added.
Ms. Porkodi warned that strict action would be taken against NGOs involved in such activities, adding, “Students wishing to join the Nursing and Engineering sectors are mostly their targets.”
Not just that, students are enrolled in colleges without proper accreditation, and when they later realise that the course they studied was not valid, they undergo immense mental distress.
Due to such issues, the statement informed that students could contact their school Headperson or the higher education guidance teacher at their school for any doubts regarding their higher education.
To facilitate the guidance process, all Headpersons have been instructed to facilitate the application process for students to join higher education through the schools where they studied, Ms. Porkodi said.
