The southern coastal areas of the district received rainfall on Wednesday even as other parts of the district witnessed only drizzle.

While the southern parts of the district like Kulasekarapattinam, Tiruchendur and Kaayalpattinam, all coastal areas, received more than 2 cm rainfall since Tuesday evening, other parts of the district mostly remained dry. However, the sweltering heat sweeping the entire district since February last has come down considerably as the sky remained overcast.

District Collector Vishu Mahajan on Wednesday visited the banks of the Tamirabharani River at Murappanadu as this area had witnessed in the past breaches whenever the perennial river was in spate. He asked the officials to strengthen the vulnerable points and keep sufficient number of sandbags ready to plug breach, if any, in case of the upcoming Northeast monsoon-triggered flood in the Tamirabharani.

The Collector also visited the drinking water pumping station at nearby Vallanaadu, the prime drinking water source of Thoothukudi.

Rainfall in the district (in mm): Tiruchendur – 33, Kulasekarapattinam – 22, Kaayalpattinam – 21, Vaippaar – 13, Soorangudi – 7, Saththankulam – 3.

In Tirunelveli, no rainfall was reported in any part of the district on Wednesday. While Kalakkad recorded just 3 mm rainfall, the highest precipitation in the district till 8 a.m. on Wednesday, other places had to be content with just drizzle, which was only a solace from the prolonged heatwaves lashing the district since February.

Similar weather was reported in neighbouring Tenkasi district also on Wednesday. After warm forenoon, weather in the afternoon was manageable with the mild breeze and overcast sky.

Barring Balamore, which recorded 26 mm precipitation, no other parts of Kanniyakumari district received significant rainfall on Wednesday. The overcast sky and soothing weather foretold the arrival of Northeast monsoon within next 48 hours.

Rainfall in the district (in mm): Balamore – 26.20, Mambazhathuraiyar Dam – 18.60, Aanaikidangu – 13.80, Thuckalay – 9, Surulacode – 6.20, Kurunthancode – 4.40, Kannimar – 4.20, Mukkadal Dam – 3.20, Boothapandy – 2.80, Perunchaani Dam – 2.40, Puththen Dam – 1.
