Superintendent of Police K.S. Balla Krisshnan has instructed police personnel to maintain heightened vigil at sensitive polling stations and ensure strict adherence to election rules in view of the forthcoming Assembly elections.
Addressing a special training programme for police personnel held at a private marriage hall in Nagapattinam on Sunday, the SP said that once the election schedule is announced, the Model Code of Conduct must be followed in letter and in spirit.
He emphasised that police should discharge their duties impartially, without favour or bias, towards any political party.
Mr. Balla Krisshnan said adequate precautionary measures should be taken to ensure peaceful polling and that strict action would be initiated against anyone attempting to intimidate voters. Law and order would be closely monitored outside polling stations, he added.
Noting that the Election Commission was expected to announce the poll schedule soon, he urged personnel to remain alert and prepared. He also stressed that police must not act in a partisan manner and should enforce the Model Code of Conduct uniformly against violators.
Deputy Superintendents of Police, Inspectors, Sub-Inspectors and more than 300 police personnel participated in the training.
